Hidden beneath John Wilson’s Self-Portrait (1943), painted when the artist was just 21 years old, is a second self-portrait, revealed when the painting underwent X-radiography. Much can be understood of Wilson’s early approach to painting and materials by looking at the painting through various imaging techniques.
