Neon signage is known for its glowing aesthetic, becoming popular in the mid-20th century with pop art and conceptual art. From broken tubes to outdated transformers, conserving neon means tackling challenges that blend science, craftsmanship, and creativity. Jeppe Hein’s PLEASE… (2008), made of electrified glass tubes filled with noble gases, is as fragile as it is iconic. Conservators recently replaced aging electrode covers and assessed its condition to ensure the sculpture is both stable and safe to display. Learn how neon artworks function, and how conservation efforts can keep them glowing for years to come.

With Christine Mitchell, Hansjörg Wyss Associate Conservator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Objects Conservation Laboratory.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Talks meet at Sharf Visitor Center.
