Students from the Museum’s Community Arts Initiative partners collaborated with artist and educator Perla Mabel to create the mixed-media mural on view in “Empowered Faces” (June 3 to October 24, 2022). Composed of the students’ self-portraits, collage, and sewing, the layered installation celebrates cultural identity, self-discovery, and community. Led by Mabel, the young artists studied portraits by contemporary artists and translated their own ideas across media.
