Paper marbling, ebrû in Turkish, is a traditional art of the Islamic world. The marbler creates the colorful, swirling patterns of ebrû by floating paints on a liquid and picking them up on paper. Feridun Özgören, a Turkish artist living in Boston, adapts traditional ebrû to large paper sheets and uses hand-cut stencils to add Arabic, Turkish, or Persian calligraphy to his marbled compostitions. Twelve of his calligraphic ebrû works were on view for this exhibition.
