This year's "SMFA Traveling Scholars" exhibition presents work by seven recipients of the 2007 Traveling Scholarship Awards given annually by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Nicolas Brynolfson, Matthew Paul Cleary, Daniel Dueck, Daniel Johnson, Timothy A. Kadish, John Osorio-Buck, and Lauren Warner. Annually totaling $80,000–$100,000, this prestigious program is one of the largest art school travel grant programs in the United States.
"SMFA Traveling Scholars" features traditional and experimental media such as painting and drawing (Lauren Warner and Daniel Dueck), mixed media on canvas (Timothy A. Kadish), installation (Matthew Paul Cleary, Daniel Johnson, and John Osorio-Buck), and film (Nicolas Brynolfson). The exhibition is the culmination of nearly two years of travel and artistic exploration that took artists to Europe, South America, Central America, Canada, and across the United States. Whether dialoguing with art of the past, searching for a contemporary language of spirituality, or reflecting on nature and our place in it, these artists present seven highly individual statements.
