BOSTON, MA (May 27, 2016)—The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and Japan’s Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts (N/BMFA) will conclude their partnership on March 31, 2019 when their 20-year contract expires. Established by The Foundation for the Arts, Nagoya (FAN), the N/BMFA opened in 1999 as the MFA’s sister museum. Since then, the N/BMFA has presented approximately 45 exhibitions—from Japanese masterpieces to Impressionist treasures—organized by the MFA and drawn from its encyclopedic collection.

“It has been an honor to work with Nagoya for so many years,” said Katie Getchell, Deputy Director at the MFA. “We are grateful to Director Shunkichi Baba and all of the N/BMFA staff, who have worked diligently to bring Boston’s artistic treasures to millions of visitors, as well as the City of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, and local businesses who have made this possible. We look forward to three more years of successful collaboration, part of our long and ongoing relationship with Japan.”

The MFA is the first and only American museum to have a sister institution in Asia. Over the past 17 years, the N/BMFA has welcomed 4.4 million visitors. The partnership has served as an important model for artistic and cultural exchange between the US and Japan.
