Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Appoints Anastasia Christophilopoulou as George D. and Margo Behrakis Chair, Art of Ancient Greece and Rome

Boston (May 2, 2024) —The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), announced today the appointment of Anastasia Christophilopoulou as the George D. and Margo Behrakis Chair, Art of Ancient Greece and Rome. Christophilopoulou comes to the MFA from the University of Cambridge, where she currently serves as the Senior Curator of the Ancient Mediterranean at the Fitzwilliam Museum. A classical archaeologist and curator specializing in ancient Mediterranean cultures, with an emphasis on ancient Greece, Rome and the Mediterranean islands, Christophilopoulou will assume her position at the MFA in the early fall.

"I look forward to working collaboratively and creatively with the MFA’s staff, supporters and advisors to make the department’s collection relevant to all in the region and beyond, through participation, co-creation and inclusion.”

At Cambridge, Christophilopoulou is also an associate for the Faculty of Classics and a senior Academic Fellow for the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, a member of the management committee for the Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies, an affiliated fellow for the Center for Science and Policy (CSaP) and a Member of the Council of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. She is co-director of an innovative archaeological survey project in Western Samos, under the permit of the Ministry of Culture, Greece, and has led numerous initiatives on material culture interpretation and archaeological analysis.

Christophilopoulou holds a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Cambridge. In addition to her curatorial and academic work, she has been a long-serving board member for several organizations in the United Kingdom and internationally that advocate for the value of the classical world today and for the preservation of heritage in the Mediterranean. She has also served as a consultant for antiquities and heritage for national authorities in the Mediterranean.
