BOSTON (July 19, 2023)—The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), announced today the appointment of Lucía Abramovich Sánchez as the Carolyn and Peter Lynch Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture. Sánchez comes to the MFA from the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), where she served as Associate Curator of Latin American Art. Sánchez, who brings an expertise in art of the Spanish Americas to the MFA, will start her position at the MFA on September 18.

At SAMA, she oversaw the Nelson A. Rockefeller Latin American Art Center, a 30,000-square-foot wing with six galleries, and a collection of over 10,000 Latin American objects that span 4,000 years of history. Sánchez’s recent projects include the reimagining and installation of the Latin American Popular Art Gallery and a collaborative reinstallation of the Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art Gallery. She has both organized and presented several exhibitions, stewarded numerous acquisitions and worked to engage San Antonio’s Latino/a/e community through programming and partnerships.

An Argentine American raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Sánchez earned her doctorate from Tulane University in Art History and Latin American Studies; a master’s degree from the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Research Unit in the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas and an undergraduate degree from The College of William & Mary in Anthropology and Latin American Studies. Before arriving at SAMA, she held positions at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.
