Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to Receive $30,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
BOSTON (December 13, 2016)—The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), will receive an Art Works grant of $30,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts, for the upcoming Matisse in the Studio exhibition. The Art Works category focuses on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence; public engagement with diverse and excellent art; lifelong learning in the arts; and the strengthening of communities through the arts.
“We are delighted that the NEA has approved a grant for our upcoming Matisse in the Studio exhibition. The MFA remains grateful to the NEA for its support of our exhibitions and programming, and its work to promote the arts across the nation,” said Maria Muller, Chief of External Relations and Deputy Director of the MFA.
NEA Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017.
“The arts are for all of us, and by supporting organizations such as the MFA, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing more opportunities for the public to engage with the arts,” said Chu. “Whether in a theater, a town square or a hospital, the arts are everywhere and make our lives richer.”
Matisse in the Studio is the first major international exhibition to examine the roles that objects from the artist’s personal collection played in his art, demonstrating their profound influence on his creative choices. Major works from different periods of Matisse’s career will be showcased alongside about 35 objects that the artist kept in his studios—many on loan from the Musée Matisse, Nice, as well as private collections—and publicly exhibited outside of France for the first time. The exhibition debuts at the MFA on April 9, 2017 and is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, produced by MFA Publications. The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Royal Academy of Arts. Sponsored by Bank of America. Presented with support from the Betty L. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), is recognized for the quality and scope of its collection, representing all cultures and time periods. The Museum has more than 140 galleries displaying its encyclopedic collection, which includes Art of the Americas; Art of Europe; Contemporary Art; Art of Asia, Oceania, and Africa; Art of the Ancient World; Prints, Drawings, and Photographs; Textile and Fashion Arts; and Musical Instruments. Admission is free for University Members and individual youths age 17 and younger. Wednesday nights after 4 pm admission is by voluntary contribution (suggested donation $25).
