Directed by Stanley Kubrick (USA/UK, 1964, 105 min.). Digital.
Kubrick’s zany dark comedy satirizes Cold War tensions between the USSR and the USA, making light of the apocalyptic threat of nuclear war and the absurd ease with which it can be triggered. Sterling Hayden stars as Jack D. Ripper, an insane US General who believes the Russians are using fluoridated water to “pollute” the minds and bodies of US citizens. Peter Sellers plays three equally crazy characters, including a Nazi nuclear war expert and the President of the United States. In the hands of these maniacs, life on earth doesn’t stand a chance.
