Directed by Éric Barbier (France, 2017, 131 min.). Digital. French with English subtitles. Massachusetts Premiere.

Promise at Dawn is an epic drama about French writer Romain Gary’s extraordinary life. Gary (Pierre Niney, Frantz) grew up the only child of a devoted mother (brilliantly played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melancholia). Based on Gary’s own autobiographical novel, the film’s sweeping narrative takes Gary though his early years in Poland, his playful adolescence in Nice, his student years in Paris, and his pilot training during WWII. Driven to greatness by his search for maternal approval, Gary is the only writer to have won the prestigious Goncourt Prize for French literature twice.
