Directed by Zaza Urushadze (Georgia/Estonia, 2017, 89 min.). Digital. Georgian with English subtitles.
Zaza Urushadze (director of the Oscar-nominated Tangerines) helms this drama about a filmmaker turned priest named Giorgi who is assigned to a small parish in a remote and picturesque mountain village when the previous pastor dies suddenly. In an effort to help the community and grow his parish, Giorgi and his jovial assistant, Valiko, start a movie night in an old warehouse. After a screening of Some Like It Hot, the audience is struck by the similarities between Marilyn Monroe and the local music teacher, Lili. It isn’t long before Father Giorgi crosses paths with the bewitching and mysterious Lili, who tempts him to return to his secular past. The Confession is a sensuously filmed exploration of the dark secrets hidden behind beautiful facades.
Followed by a discussion with Sofia Gegechkori, public affairs and communications counselor of the Embassy of Georgia in Washington, DC, and Anna Winestein, executive director of Ballets Russes Arts Initiative.
Co-presented with Ballets Russes Arts Initiative, with support from the Embassy of Georgia to the United States and the Georgian National Film Center.
