Join choreographers in residence, The Davis Sisters, in “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Stars of Paris”

The Davis Sisters (Alexander and Joy Davis, who were recently denied an Academy Award and are not available for an interview about it at this time) dive into the colorful world of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in this world premiere, immersive, site-specific, overly-cited, unsightly dance theater work created and performed in the galleries of “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Stars of Paris” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

About the Choreographers

At the threshold of dance, theater, comedy, and installation, The Davis Sisters draw from pop culture and the pedestrian. They delve into topics about love, queerness, hope, and memory that transcend boundaries and make space for individual connection. Through rigorous imagination, movement improvisation and the ridiculous, the duo dare to create scenarios in which we perform magnified versions of ourselves.

The Davis Sisters were awarded a 2018 Schonberg [Boston] Fellowship for an Offshore Creation Residency at The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard.

Joy Davis is a dance artist and educator steeped in the practices of Countertechnique and improvisation. In 2006, she founded joyproject, which produces collaborative dance theater performance ripe with contemplation, humor, and elegant design. Joy has been a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Greenhouse Artist, Choreographic Resident at the Workspace for Choreographers, Choreographer's Lab Artist with New Dialect (Nashville), NeXt Choreographer for Urbanity Dance (Boston), and recently awarded the Next Steps 2019 Grant from the Boston Foundation. She currently collaborates with Mountain Empire Dance Collective, School for Contemporary Dance and Thought, and composer Eric Mullis. She is also an associate professor of dance at Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Alexander Davis is a graduate of Keene State College where they received a BA in English: Writing, and a BA in Theatre and Dance: Choreography and Performance. Alex has collaborated with organizations across Boston including Ryan Landry's Gold Dust Orphans, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Children's Chorus, World Music/CRASHarts and Improv Asylum/Laugh Boston. Alex is currently a company member and director of their Summer Choreographer Intensive Program with Urbanity Dance. As a choreographer and fiber artist Alex has received grant and residency support from The Studios at Mass MoCA, The Boston Foundation, Urbanity Dance, and The Theatre Offensive. Most recently, Alex assisted Choreographer Monica Bill Barnes on Greta Gerwig's film adaptation of Little Women.
