Tal National is a joyously hypnotic, highly unique contribution to West African guitar music, with lightning-fast rhythms and a rotating cast of vocalists. In this electrifying music can be heard the history of Niger as a cultural crossroads along ancient trade routes. The group includes members of the area’s Songhai, Fulani, Huasa, and Tuareg populations, and its sound is a fusion of musical traditions, with the rolling 12/8 rhythms of the Hausa’s fuji profusion; the pensive aridity of the Tuareg’s assouf, or “blues”; and the exquisite “griot guitar” of the Songhai.
