Due to inclement weather, this concert has been moved inside to Remis Auditorium.
The Garifuna Collective fits squarely in the tradition of cultural innovation exemplified by the late Andy Palacio, a prominent musician and champion of the Garifuna community, an indigenous people in the Caribbean struggling to retain its unique language, music, and traditions in the face of globalization.
The band includes some of the best musicians in the fertile Garifuna music scene. They bring together the deep cultural roots of Garifuna music, mixed with modern grooves, arrangements, and an array of instruments: unique hand drums—the “primera” and the “segunda”—turtle shells, jawbones, guitars, and bass. The musicians create a powerful energy on stage, building hypnotizing rhythms that form the backbone for haunting melodies and powerful vocals.
