For over a century, film audiences have been moved and delighted by colors on a glowing screen. In 1902, magician and filmmaker Georges Méliès paid a legion of technicians to hand-tint each frame of his fantasy adventure A Trip to the Moon with jewel tones, transporting audiences to the lunar surface as he imagined it; thirty-seven years later, Dorothy’s passage from sepia-toned Kansas into the kaleidoscopic land of Oz enraptured audiences young and old.

As color film became more common in the second half of the 20th century, filmmakers outgrew the use of color as a crowd-pleasing novelty and began to employ it in more sophisticated ways, including as a storytelling device. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s Black Narcissus (1947) was a pioneering example, invoking luscious red to represent the sensual pleasures that tantalize a group of drab-clothed nuns dwelling high in the Himalayas. Stephen Spielberg placed bursts of yellow in Jaws (1975) to foreshadow danger, and minimized the use of red except for a few choice moments of carnage, rendering those moments horrifically effective. And in his dreamy 1977 film 3 Women, Robert Altman dressed each of the protagonists in her own pastel hue. gently altering the colors of their clothing as the characters evolved over the course of the narrative. Just in time for the darkest days of winter, this vibrant series features nine films that make intentional use of color to tell their stories.
