Transcript: Curator Emily Beeny Speaks about the Popularity of Impressionist Art

EMILY BEENY: I think Impressionism is popular partly because it represents and celebrates the experience of everyday life and the beauty of nature. And these are experiences that are accessible to everyone, really. We might not be as familiar with say, the religious iconography of 17th century Italian baroque painting, but everyone knows what it is like to be outside on a beautiful day of the kind painted by Monet and Renoir in their high Impressionist period. So I think these paintings kind of open a window onto the world, and to real life experience that is familiar and accessible to all of us.
