Excavations at the royal necropolis of Anubis-Mountain at Abydos in southern Egypt have identified 13 tombs of pharaohs dating between about 1850 and 1600 BCE. These kings, who reigned during Egypt’s Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate period, were drawn to Abydos for its religious association with Osiris, god of the netherworld, as well as its links to the earliest pharaohs of Egypt.

In this enlightening lecture, learn more about the tombs at Anubis-Mountain, which vary dramatically in size and design—from the immense underground tomb of pharaoh Senwosret III to the tiny but colorfully decorated tomb of pharaoh Seneb-Kay. Hear about recent discoveries of additional royal tombs and discover what they reveal about the Ancient Egyptian kings who built them.
