Join renowned architect Billie Tsien for a lecture exploring the dichotomies that are ever present in her work—a wish for permanence and an acknowledgement of change. Tsien once compared her work as an architect to On the Tundra, a sculpture by artist Martin Puryear on view in the exhibition “Martin Puryear: Nexus,” by writing: “The rock on which she perches reaches down to the center of the earth. It cannot be moved. Yet she, when she wants to, is capable of flight at a burning speed. The tension between the two is delicate and unbearable…. As architects, we are always trying to make work that feels connective to its site and rooted in the topography of the place. We do not have the opportunity to imagine an apparatus that can take flight as part of what we do. So, we try for the rock on which she perches—but we will never have the bird.”

Hear from Tsien as she draws from personal experience, artistic collaborations, and experience designing building to discusses how she creates places centered on experience and how her process has evolved over time.
