Directed by Shahram Mokri (Tajikistan and UAE, 2025, 139 min.). Tajik, Farsi, and Russian with English subtitles.
From Shahram Mokri (Fish and Cat), Black Rabbit, White Rabbit is an intricate, mind-bending mystery in which a single violent incident sends a constellation of lives spiraling into uncanny alignment. As a director attempts a meticulous remake of a classic Iranian film, an anxious armorer frets over a real gun on set, a young actress pushes against familial expectations, and a wealthy woman recovering from a car crash suspects she’s trapped in a widening conspiracy. What begins as a series of seemingly unrelated moments gradually unfolds into a cinematic M. C. Escher drawing—reality and fiction looping, mirroring, and collapsing into one another. Selected as Tajikistan’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Mokri’s latest layers its stories with sly wit and formal daring, building toward a singular, unforgettable climax.
