Directed by Hsiao-hsien Hou (Taiwan, 1986, 109 min.). Taiwanese and Mandarin with English subtitles.
Childhood friends Wan and Huen take the slow train to school every day. As the local mining industry in their hometown of Jiufen declines, Wan moves to Taipei for work, and Huen soon follows. The two struggle in the city but support each other through life’s challenges. When Wan is called to military service, the friends stay connected by writing letters to each other—until Huen’s replies suddenly stop coming.
Inspired by cowriter Nien-jen Wu’s personal experiences, Dust in the Wind explores the bittersweet journey of Taiwanese youth in the 1970s leaving their rural homes in search of a better life. Director Hsiao-hsien Hou beautifully captures the unspoken emotions of a generation in transition.
