Directed by Ang Lee (Taiwan and USA, 1994, 124 min.). Mandarin and French with English subtitles.

Master chef Chu has lost his sense of taste, but continues to prepare an elaborate Sunday dinner each week for his three grown daughters, whose lives are quietly pulling them away from the family home. Jia-Jen, the oldest, is a devout Christian who has taken on her late mother’s household duties. Jia-Chien, a capable airline executive, shares her father’s culinary talent but avoids her own kitchen and dreams of buying a home of her own. The youngest, Jia-Ning, is a cheerful college student just beginning to explore romance. As Chu cooks, his daughters confront their own emotional crossroads, and generational tensions simmer just beneath the surface of their shared meals—until an unexpected visitor begins to shift everything.

The first Taiwanese film to open the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes, Eat Drink Man Woman was also nominated for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. Presented here in a luminous new digital restoration to mark its 30th anniversary, the film is the final chapter in Ang Lee’s “Father Knows Bes” trilogy (alongside Pushing Hands and The Wedding Banquet), a series of gently comedic and emotionally resonant portraits of family conflict and fatherhood in the Confucian tradition.
