Directed by Robert Altman (UK, Italy, and USA, 2001, 137 min.).
Set in an English country estate in 1932, Gosford Park serves up murder with a side of manners in Robert Altman’s impeccably layered whodunit. When a wealthy industrialist is found dead during a weekend hunting party, both the aristocratic guests and their sharply observant servants come under scrutiny. Altman’s signature use of multiple roaming cameras during filming meant the cast—featuring Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas, Helen Mirren, Ryan Phillipe, Richard E. Grant, Emily Watson, and Clive Owen—had to remain in character at all times, their overlapping conversations creating a tapestry of intrigue. Elegant, acerbic, and endlessly rewatchable, Gosford Park is cozy crime at its most refined.
