Set in 16th-century England, the film centers on Agnes (Jessie Buckley), a fiercely intuitive mother whose bond with her son, Hamnet, is rendered with aching intimacy; and on her husband, William (Paul Mescal), whose creative life unfolds in the long shadow of grief.
