Directed by Audrey Diwan (France, 2021, 100 min.). French with English subtitles.

France, 1963: Anne is a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she becomes pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background by disappearing. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne resolves to take control of her future, even if it means risking prison—or death—to do so. Based on a memoir by Annie Ernaux, this intimate drama won both the Golden Lion (the highest honor) and the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival. Though it was filmed before news leaked of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, recent events reframe Happening with a new and chilling urgency.

“Unassuming and rapturous...Diwan almost stubbornly validates and celebrates the equality of a woman’s desire. What a rare treat in a punishing world that denies women that parity.” —

Co-presented with the Boston French Cultural Center and Independent Film Festival Boston.
