Directed by Frauke Finsterwalder (German, Switzerland, and Austria, 2023, 132 min.). German, English, and French with English subtitles.
At the turn of the 20th century, Countess Irma Sztáray (Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller) leaves her home in Hungary to become the lady-in-waiting for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Susanne Wolff), known to those close to her as Sisi. Irma falls under the spell of the rebellious Empress Sisi, and the two form a strong bond during a summer retreat in Greece. However, once home in Vienna, their lives take dramatic and irrevocable turns. Falling somewhere between Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favorite, Sisi and I offers a biting, beautiful and very funny new lens on the ever-fascinating Empress.
Co-presented with the Goethe-Institute Boston.
“Lively, gorgeously attired costume drama.… [Irma is] played with cunning and exuberance by the dependable Sandra Hüller.” —Variety
