Directed by Tarsem (USA, South Africa, and India, 2006, 117 min.). English, Romanian, and Latin with English subtitles.
In silent-era Hollywood, stuntman Roy Walker is brought to a hospital after an on-set accident. There, he befriends a young girl and tells her a fantastical tale of epic heroes taking revenge on an evil ruler. The story transports the girl from the hospital into the lush landscapes of her imagination. Shot over four years in 24 countries without a script, this self-funded sophomore feature from the director of The Cell (2000) uses only practical effects and real-life locations to achieve its visual splendor—no green screens or CGI. It has been unavailable to watch due to rights issues since its initial home video release, but thanks to a new restoration by Mubi it returns to screens in glorious 4K.
“Tarsem’s The Fall is a mad folly, an extravagant visual orgy, a free-fall from reality into uncharted realms. Surely it is one of the wildest indulgences a director has ever granted himself.… a movie that you might want to see for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it.” —Roger Ebert
