Directed by Kelly Reichardt (USA, 2025, 110 min.). English and French with English subtitles.
Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women; Meek’s Cutoff) returns to New England—where she studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts—for this wry, slow-burn heist drama set in 1970s Framingham. Josh O’Connor stars as J. B. Mooney, an out-of-work carpenter and would-be art thief whose plans to steal a quartet of Arthur Dove paintings unravel fast. With a stacked cast including Alana Haim, Gaby Hoffmann, and Hope Davis, The Mastermind quietly exposes the gap between outlaw fantasy and everyday obligation in a moment of American unrest. Premiered in competition at Cannes, this film is a rare blend of procedural suspense, period atmosphere, and Reichardt’s unmistakable sensitivity to character and place.
