Directed by Ezra Axelrod, Jimmy Ferguson, and Gloria Nancy Monsalve (Colombia, 2024, 100 min.). Spanish with English subtitles. Massachusetts premiere.
This perceptive and revelatory documentary follows a family in Cali, Colombia, who have embraced Orthodox Judaism and dream of relocating to Jerusalem. Living precariously in a beautiful but volatile city shaken by unrest and drug violence, parents Isska and Menajem hope to start anew in Israel with their two young daughters.
With intimate empathy and escalating tension, Torah Tropical captures a family’s struggle to improve their lives, find a sense of belonging, and reaffirm their faith in the face of mounting obstacles.
Stay tuned after the screening for a conversation with director Ezra Axelrod and photographer Heidi Paster Harf via Zoom, moderated by Dr. Dalia Wasner, director of Jews of the Americas at Brandeis University.
