The MFA recently acquired a Torah ark created in 1912 by woodworker and carver Samuel Katz. The ark, an ornate cabinet that housed Torah scrolls, is originally from the Shaare Zion Synagogue on Orange Street in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Through close examination of this unique sacred object, explore the history of a regional congregation and learn how the ark embodies the changes and challenges that Jews in Chelsea faced in the 20th century.

With Christine Storti, head of Furniture and Frame Conservation.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Due to space constraints, tours are limited to 12 participants (first come, first served). Tours meet at Sharf Visitor Center. Assistive listening devices available upon request.
