There is a long history of artists and practitioners using gold and silver to decorate paper, from early medieval manuscripts embellished with gilding to modern metal foil papers. Examine a selection of decorated paper up close, including this 18th-century brocade paper, to discover how these rare materials were applied. Learn to spot fakes through examples that try to imitate the same look with less expensive options, some of which can both elevate and degrade artworks as they age.

With Fenna Engelke, Claire W. and Richard P. Morse Fellow for Advanced Training in Conservation of Works of Art on Paper.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Due to space constraints, tours are limited to 12 participants (first come, first served). Tours meet at Sharf Visitor Center. Assistive listening devices available upon request.
