Meet in the Sharf Visitor Center
The MFA collection includes more than 140 Japanese Nō masks related to the Nō theater tradition, which was popularized by the aristocracy from the 14th to 19th centuries. By the Edo period (1615–1868), the types of masks were highly codified, so subtle differences in the painting and treatment of the interiors of the masks were the only areas of relative freedom for mask creators. View a selection of masks up close to appreciate the nuanced variations, and hear about the preservation challenges for these fragile objects.
