Before the era of the printed book, texts were transcribed by hand, with the most sumptuous and expensive also embellished with images and other decorative elements. Examine a few early European manuscripts up close to focus on the materials and methods of production. Comparing examples such as this psalter and homiliary from the perspective of materials can reveal much about the people and places that produced them. Join this discussion to learn about early bookbinding in medieval Europe and the different pigments and parchment that were used.
