Especially in his portraits of the Roulin family, Van Gogh turned to the work of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and other Dutch artists who came before him. Learn how Van Gogh drew inspiration from 17th-century Dutch art, pulling from it models for how to approach portraiture as a genre and how to create a distinctive pictorial style.
