“What I’m most passionate about, much, much more than all the rest in my profession—is the portrait, the modern portrait,” Vincent van Gogh wrote in June 1890. During his stay in the south of France (1888–89), this enthusiasm had resulted in an astonishing series of portraits of his cherished friends, the Roulin family. Take an in-depth look at the Roulin portraits and the place of portraiture within the artist’s practice and within the art world of his time.

Bag Checks
All bags are subject to inspection by Museum staff. Backpacks, large bags, all liquids including hand sanitizer and sunscreen, and outside food or drink are not permitted.
