The past serves the present in much of Asia and continues to have powerful impact today. Follow the emergence of early cultures, the march of Buddhism across Asia, the importance of imperial collectors, and the role of the scholar-connoisseur in the making of a small bowl by a modest craftsman—and untangle the many “isms” of Asian religious thought, leading to the vital role each still play in the arts.
