From tender mother to celestial queen, the image of Mary has carried centuries of devotion, wonder, and change. In this Looking Together, follow Mary’s presence across time—from solemn medieval panels to the radiant visions of the Renaissance—and see how artists shaped her story anew in every era. Through color, gesture, gaze, and setting, the Madonna reveals not only evolving ideals of beauty and faith, but also the deep human longing for grace and compassion. Take to the galleries to see several exemplary artworks: slow down, look closely, and discover how much a single image can reveal.
