Flowers are everywhere in Indian painting. In this two-session course, timed to coincide with the arrival of spring, explore paintings depicting five flowers that bloom in the winter and spring in South Asia: poppy, narcissus, rose, iris, and chrysanthemum. Though none of these plants are native to the region, over time they became integral to the landscape, visual culture, poetry, and aesthetics of South Asia. There is something for gardeners and art lovers alike to enjoy in this course inspired by the recent installation “Flowers of Winter and Spring: South Asian Paintings from the MFA Collection.”
