Meet in Sharf Visitor Center
This Nō mask is one of more than 140 in the MFA collection related to the Nō theater tradition, which was popularized by the aristocracy from the 14th to 19th centuries. By the Edo period (1615–1868), the types of masks were highly codified, so subtle differences in the painting and treatment of the interiors of the masks were the only areas of relative freedom for mask creators. Hear about their nuanced variations, and learn how conservators address preservation challenges for these fragile objects.
With Linsly Boyer, associate conservator, Objects Conservation Laboratory.
