There are fewer than 40 known works by Michaelina Wautier, a successful female painter working in Brussels in the 17th century. Among them are the paintings that comprise her allegorical series of the five senses as young boys. Though artists often used the five senses as their subject, it is rare for an entire set to survive intact. Hear about the ongoing research and treatment of these paintings at the MFA, and find out what conservators have learned about Wautier’s use of materials and her sometimes idiosyncratic painting technique.

With Alice Limb, Andrew W. Mellon Fellow for Advanced Training, Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Paintings Conservation Studio.

Free with general admission. No advance registration or tickets required. Talks meet at Sharf Visitor Center.
