For years Sevim has worked as a housekeeper for Ayten, playing a key role in managing the household while financially supporting her daughter and son-in-law. When Ayten’s Kosovan helper, Lena, suffers an accident, it sparks a legal dispute between the parties. Under pressure from Ayten to convince Lena to drop her claim, Sevim becomes entangled in a web of moral, ethical, and class struggles, forcing her to confront the stark power dynamics that shape her life.

Winner of Best Screenplay and Best Director awards at the Adana Golden Boll Film Festival, as well as Best Screenplay and Best Actress (Serpil Gül) at the Ankara Film Festival. Director Erkan Tahhuşoğlu received a Special Mention at the Boston Turkish Festival’s 19th Documentary and Short Film Competition for his documentary Ufku and Ulviye, and his feature film Corridor (Koridor) was screened at the 2022 Boston Turkish Film Festival.

The Good Death (İyi Ölüm)

Directed by Hasan Ete. (Türkiye, 2024, 20 min.). Turkish with English subtitles. Director present.

In medical literature, a “good death” is one that respects the individual’s privacy and sensitivity; addresses their emotional, spiritual, and religious needs and wishes; and allows sufficient time for farewells. Founded in 2007, the Wish Ambulance Foundation continues its efforts to ensure that terminally ill patients with limited time can experience a “good death.” Today, the foundation fulfills the last wishes of people of all ages facing imminent death. Frank Halter, a retired police officer who volunteers for the foundation in the Netherlands, has been involved in this work for six years. The Good Death focuses on the last wishes of Wim Beuving, a terminally ill man with limited time remaining, and his encounter with Frank Halter, who volunteers to make these wishes a reality.

Also preceded by:

Morî

Directed by Yakup Tekintangaç (Türkiye, 2024, 19 min.). Turkish with English subtitles. Director present.

The only keepsake Morî has from her father is an audio recording of the fairy tale he used to tell her—a story she listens to time and again. One day, a new teacher arrives at school, and the moment Morî sees him, she becomes convinced he is her father. Clinging to this belief, she forms a deep emotional bond with the teacher, blurring the line between memory and reality.
