Directed by Jean-Paul Salomé (France, 2025, 128 min.). French and Polish with English subtitles.
Inspired by an extraordinary true story, Jean-Paul Salomé’s engrossing thriller follows Jan Bojarski (Reda Kateb), a Polish refugee whose remarkable technical gifts transform him into one of France’s most elusive counterfeiters. Set against a richly realized portrait of France as it emerges from World War II, the film follows Bojarski as he works alone for years in a backyard workshop, producing banknotes so flawless he earns the nickname “the Cézanne of counterfeit money.” As his operation grows ever more ambitious, he attracts the attention of Inspector Mattei (Bastien Bouillon), setting in motion a tense cat-and-mouse pursuit spanning decades.
Combining the meticulous detail of a procedural with the sweep of an epic historical drama, The Money Maker is a fascinating portrait of a man driven as much by a desire for recognition as by criminal ambition.
