Born in Montreal, the Grenadian Canadian Kaia Kater has garnered acclaim from NPR’s Tiny Desk, the Guardian, and Rolling Stone for her jazz-fueled voice, deft songwriting, and artful banjo playing. Her music draws on influences rooted in Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia—all of which reflect the diversity of her background, her ties to the Canadian folk music scene, her years spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia, and her recent work in film composition.

Kater created her latest album, Strange Medicine, during a period of deep self-reflection and reinvention. She expanded her creative scope with cinematic arrangements and collaborated with the likes of Taj Mahal, Allison Russell, and Aoife O’Donovan. Experience an electrifying performance at the MFA as Kater performs songs that celebrate the power of women and oppressed people throughout history while also meditating on her own life.

“…plaintive, mesmerizing … writes and performs with the skill of a folk-circuit veteran.” —Rolling Stone
