Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martínez was born in the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Havana, Cuba, where you can hear rumba playing all day long. He began his musical career at the age of 11, with a foundation in rumba and Afro Cuban Yoruba traditions. Since settling in New York City, Martínez has performed with artists such as Paul Simon, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Matthews, and Sting, and has contributed to more than 75 albums.
A consummate master of Afro-Cuban folk music and the batá drum, the world’s premiere rumbero comes to the MFA to play, sing, and dance the night away.
“A source of rhythmic delight and inspiration … an incomparable performer … a traditional Afro-Cuban music superstar.” —New York Times
