Tamikrest—Tamasheq for “junction” or “connection”—is the perfect name for a band whose members hail from Mali, Niger, Algeria, and France but are united by a shared Touareg identity. The group’s music is a tribute to the Touareg people, who come from the Sahara, spiced up with modern rock influences. Formed in Mali with nothing but two homemade guitars, the group has since garnered an international following for its dynamic arrangements and lyrics about longing for a world that’s free for everyone.
In its mission to make Tamasheq poetry and Touareg culture accessible to people beyond the Sahara, Tamikrest comes to the MFA for a performance that’s sure to electrify.
