This Japanese sword is one of more than 550 in the MFA collection. The swords make up one of the best collections outside of Japan and span the 1,000 years from the Heian to modern periods, including many important and rare examples from renowned Japanese swordsmiths. Learn about the very particular care required for these objects and the highly specialized world of Japanese sword connoisseurship.

With Linsly Boyer, associate conservator, Objects Conservation Laboratory.
