Directed by Cédric Kahn (France, 2023, 115 min.). French with English subtitles.

In 1975, controversial left-wing activist Pierre Goldman was put on trial for a double murder in France, all the while vehemently proclaiming his innocence. Considered the trial of the century, it divided an entire country and widened the gap between the conservative right and left-wing intellectuals. This gripping procedural, which opened the 2023 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight program to triumphant reviews, reveals the political, ideological, and racial tensions that marked the 1970s in France and Europe and persist today, furthering a contemporary wave of searingly relevant courtroom dramas inaugurated by Alice Diop’s St. Omer. As Goldman, Arieh Worthalter (Lukas Dhont’s Girl and this year's BFFF inclusion All to Play For) delivers a “near-feral” (Variety) performance that won him the the Cesár Award for Best Actor. All in all, film racked up a total of eight Cesár nominations, including for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay.

“Electrifying.… A courtroom drama that finds equal intrigue in legal order and human chaos.” —Variety
