Hazmat Modine plays the kind of blues one might have found in a barrelhouse in New Orleans, had the city been built on the Black Sea. The band is driven by harmonicas, tuba, drums, guitars, banjos, and a full horn section. More obscure instruments, such as the Romanian cimbalom, the banjitar, and the claviola, make their way in and out of songs. Front man Wade Schuman has the appropriately husky voice of someone who has both hopped freight trains and performed with Tuvan throat singers.
The band, which has toured in more than 40 countries worldwide and collaborated with a vast range of artists, brings its eclectic mix of sounds and styles to the MFA for a performance that’s sure to be unlike any other.
