Bengali Art and Culture: Living Traditions, Critical Junctures

The cosmopolitan city of Calcutta (today Kolkata) in the modern Indian state of West Bengal was an epicenter of Indian art, culture, politics in the 19th century. Social reform movements, anti-colonial organizing, and religious transformations occurred alongside experiments in theater, music, art and literature. This course, accompanying the exhibition “Divine Color: Hindu Prints from Modern Bengal,” immerses you in a dynamic Indian urban setting at the dawn of modern Indian history.
