Directed by Louise Hémon (France, 2025, 98 min.). French and Occitan with English subtitles.
Set in a remote Alpine village at the turn of the 20th century, The Girl in the Snow follows an idealistic young schoolteacher whose mission to bring enlightenment to an insular community stirs unease and desire in equal measure. As Aimée works to challenge local superstitions, unexpected events and strange disappearances in the village complicate her efforts, blurring the line between reason and belief. Louise Hémon’s striking debut blends ethnographic detail with quiet psychological intensity, unfolding in flickering candlelight and shadow. Sensual and richly atmospheric, this hypnotic slow burn immerses viewers in a world where ancient magic and modern pragmatism come face to face.
Debuting at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, The Girl in the Snow went on to win the prestigious Prix Jean Vigo, Cahiers du cinéma’s André Bazin Prize, and the Critic’s Prize at the Champs-Élysées Film.
“Hémon displays an enrapturing visual eye.… the director and DP’s chiaroscuro shadows often recall the Dutch masters.… the effect is a startling directorial debut whose sense of place and mood become as timeless as a folktale.” —RogerEbert.com
